Topographic Survey Generates Jobs for Afghans
An Afghan Surveyor Looks on as colleagues survey a segment of the Gardez-Khost Road
An Afghan surveyor looks on as colleagues survey a segment of the Gardez to Khost Road. The survey provides information needed for design of a new road while creating new jobs for Afghans.
The Gardez-Khost Road is approximately 103 kilometers long and connects the two provinces of Paktia and Khost. A recently completed topographic survey of the road is providing the basis for design and construction of a new road while creating many new jobs for Afghans.

The purpose of a topographic survey is to record and graphically represent the land surface features along the road, which enables the design team to then design the road.

The survey is subcontracted to the Yuksel Proje who began work on 11 July 2007 and completed the survey on 6 October 2007.

Four separate survey teams were involved in the survey and there were three different steps involved. Step one was to establish primary and secondary control points, and to conduct a Global Positioning System (GPS) survey. Step two was to level the survey of control points, and step three was to create the detailed topographic survey. A digital level machine, GPS and total station were some of the equipment used by the survey teams.

The survey of the Gardez-Khost Road produced many local jobs for people living in the area including laborers, drivers, interpreters, survey engineers, community development officers, and assistant survey engineers.
