| One of two badly deteriorated bridges in Uruzgon Province that will be reconstructed with USAID assistance. |
Background. For more than 25 years, Afghanistan’s transportation infrastructure deteriorated significantly due to lack of maintenance and limited new construction. The U.S. Military units from the Combined Forces Special Operations Component Command Afghanistan (CFSOCC-A)at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Cobra have designated two bridges in Uruzgon Province as essential for their efforts in resisting anti-government elements in the area. In addition to improving security in the region, the bridges will bring needed social and economic benefits to local communities.
Status. IRP personnel at FOB Cobra are moving into the new LBG/B&V Cobra Camp. The camp was constructed under the direct supervision of IRP personnel, using local labor and equipment.
The RFP for Bridge Construction has been issued as well as the RFP for the pedestrian bridge in Regak. It is anticipated that construction could begin on these projects in July 2010.
A third IRP helicopter has been contracted for this project which will facilitate transport of personnel and equipment to this remote facility.
Anticipated Impact. When completed, the new bridges will provide the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as well as the CFSOCC-A with improved access, which will increase security in the area by reducing the time to respond to local, regional, or national incidents. It will also facilitate access to social services, health and education and will provide new regional trade opportunities and improved access for farm to market activities.
