The following are clips from Episode 7: Balkh Province II of On the Road ("Hai Maidan Tai Maidan"), an innovative Afghan national TV program which showcases the diversity of Afghanistan and the progress being made in the country's development. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the weekly television series features a different region each week. The 26-episode series highlights Afghanistan’s pivotal role in the region as a traders’ route and examines the historical relevance of roads and development to local economic growth, education, and access to services. Tolo TV began airing the On the Road series on November 21, 2009 at 8:00 PM (local Kabul time). On the Road is a combined effort of the U.S. Government, the Moby Media Group and The Louis Berger Group/Black & Veatch Joint Venture.

On The Road in Balkh Province: Village Life

Instead of his usual mode of transportation, in a jeep, On the Road host Mujeeb Arez visits a village in Balkh Province atop a donkey. He finds himself in a cotton field, one of the biggest crops in Balkh, talking with a local cotton farmer. The farmer explains the products that can be made from cotton and the benefits it brings to him and his family.


On The Road in Balkh Province: Talking with Poets

On the Road host Mujeeb Arez interviews a group of poets. As a leader in literary culture, the poets of Balkh have been very active in literary associations.


On The Road in Balkh Province: Wrestling Match

Wrestling is a special custom in Balkh province. On the Road host Mujeeb Arez witnesses a demonstration before almost being pulled into the fight himself.


On The Road in Balkh Province: Visit to Zoroastrian Temple

Balkh is the center of many religious activities. As the home of Zoroastrianism, it plays host to Navbahar temple, one of the oldest of its kind. On the Road host Mujeeb Arez leads the journey to the temple and learns some of its ancient stories.
